Steve Bruce rose through the ranks as a player, from Gillingham to Norwich then his glory days at Manchester United.
Bruce done the almost impossible at Old Trafford, he was a regular, captained the side but never made the England team.
He’s done the rounds as a manager too but his days of being coveted by Premier League sides seem to be behind him now.
Bruce’s teams are hard working, defensively solid, strong but not particularly high on flare. It is unlikely that The Valley will witness the quick, expansive game that Nigel Pearson’s Leicester played on Tuesday.
The Tigers play with three central defenders, marshalled by Bruce’s son Alex, and are hard to break down. They have scored just once in each of their three competitive games this season, despite having strikers of the calibre of Jay Simpson, Matty Fryatt, Aaron McLean and recent big money German acquisition, Nick Proschwitz, to call on.
Patience will be the name of the game for the Addicks as they look to continue their impressive start to the season. It is a match that will be hard to claw back if their opponents take the lead.
Chris Powell is unlikely to change his shape or personnel, warranted everyone is fit and able to reproduce the high intensity levels shown in the opening two games. Johnnie Jackson took a hefty whack in the first half against Leicester and could be a doubt. Salim Kerkar would be the natutal replacement if the skipper is unavailable.
Powell has said that it is unlikely that new signing, Ricardo Fuller, would be anywhere near the 18 for this game. Maybe a bit of spin from the manager? Fuller is described as being fit, but not match fit, but what better player could Charlton have to bring on if they have to chase the game in the last few minutes? Fuller would be capable of a 15-20 minute cameo if required, given his experience and class. It would be no surprise if he was on the bench.
Powell may send this side out:
Hamer; Solly, Cort, Morrison, Wiggins; Pritchard, Stephens, Hollands, Jackson; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.
Subs: Sullivan, Wilson, Taylor, Green, Kerkar, Cook, Fuller.
The referee will be Simon Hooper from Wiltshire.
It is likely to be a close encounter but as long as the Addicks keep their work rate and concentration levels up, they could come away with a narrow win.
